Volunteers, fire fighters to seek pool fence applicants

Thirty volunteers and Chandler fire fighters will walk door-to-door in an older downtown neighborhood Saturday seeking qualified applicants to receive a donated pool fence or free pool fence repairs.

The effort is part of the Adopt-a-Pool-Fence program sponsored by Valley of the Sun United Way, United Phoenix Firefighters L493, Chandler Regional Medical Center, and The FireStar Fund in association with the Chandler Fire Department.

Repairs to library fencing to cost taxpayers $16,700

The city of Watertown will need to spend $16,700 to fix the marble fence outside Flower Memorial Library, City Manager Mary M. Corriveau said.

Library officials had scheduled to have minor repairs done to the wall this summer, but their plans were accelerated when a Department of Public Works employee drove a piece of machinery into the relic.

How Will Ohio's New Fence Law Affect You?

Ohio State University Extension's Guernsey County office invites you to a Fence Law Workshop on Wednesday, April 8, at 6:30 p.m., in Old Washington. The topic: Ohio's new fence law and how it will affect you.

Peggy Hall, director of OSU Extension's Agricultural and Resource Law Program, will speak.

The program takes place at the Oscar Share Hall at the Guernsey County Fairgrounds, 335 Old National Road.

Registration costs $10 per person and is due by April 6.

Girl posing as fence builder accused of smuggling

SAN DIEGO — A 16-year-old girl has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle 12 illegal immigrants while posing as a construction worker on the border fence in San Diego.

The Border Patrol says the girl, wearing a yellow hard hat and safety vest, was apprehended early Thursday. She was driving a pickup truck marked as belonging to Kiewit Corp. of Omaha, Neb., which is building about three miles of border fencing.

The Border Patrol says a Mexican passenger also wore a hard had and vest. There were eight men and three women in a modified compartment below the pickup truck bed.

Nevada bill would require fences, alarms for private pools

Legislation proposed in Nevada would require homeowners to enclose swimming pools with fences or equip the pools with alarms. Supporters of the bill say it would help prevent child drownings, but critics say it would be a costly expense for homeowners. Pool experts say an alarm system can cost as little as $20, while a fence runs more than $1,000.

Bidding to fix broken fence at White House

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House in Washington; one from Illinois, one from Tennessee and a third from Kentucky. They all go with a White House official to examine the fence.

The Tennessee contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil.

"Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me."

New Fence to Shield Kaena Point

The state and federal government are collaborating on a project to protect native plants and animals at Oahu's Kaena Point. Plans call for a six foot high mesh fence to be built from one side to the other.

The mesh will be small enough to keep rats and mice, which eat seabirds and plants, out of the protected area.

Town OK’s fences for ball fields

At Austin Park there are three baseball fields, but only one of them has enough fencing to keep most players and game attendants safe.

To correct what some see as a safety hazard, Skaneateles Rotary Club members attended Thursday night’s town board meeting seeking approval to make headway on adding fencing to Sims Field.

“This is all that’s here, this backstop,” rotary member Peter Adams said to the board. “Our proposal would be to duplicate the north field. It’s where we want to be in terms of safety.”

The fencing replacement is part of a two-pronged project that also will bring new picnic grounds to the park just beyond the outfield fence, city Recreation and Facilities Manager Sandy Jacobson said Wednesday.

The $36,000 project will not delay the western Nevada County Recreation Services softball season, as games will be played elsewhere for the first two weeks of the season, Jacobson said.

Work is being done by low bidder Arrow Fence of Rocklin.
