Armor Fence owner charged with grand theft

Patrick Jeffrey McBridePatrick Jeffrey McBrideA 55-year-old Port Charlotte man and owner of Armor Fence Systems was charged with grand theft after at least seven cases were reported where homeowners paid for fencing jobs that were never done, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said.

Patrick Jeffrey McBride of 2083 Hanson St., charged him with one of those cases by the Economic Crimes Unit Monday, the sheriff’s office reports.

Economy may hinder anti-drowning efforts

With child drownings in the Valley on pace to meet or exceed last year's total, water-safety advocates are worried that the recession may be taking a toll on efforts to keep children safe.

So far this year, nine children younger than 12 have drowned in Maricopa County. The number of drownings didn't reach that number last year until the end of July. There have been 72 other water-related incidents involving children this year, compared with 62 by the end of July 2008.

City officials say people won't be able to scale a new, much-debated fence that soon will be installed on the All-America Bridge (Y-Bridge.)

The fence, which when combined with a concrete wall will stand at 10 feet, will be made of steel, with small diamond-shaped openings too small for climbing.

FFC Fencing Co. Hires New Intern from Wheatfield, Indiana

FFC Fencing Co., located in Cedar Lake, Indiana, was chosen to be part of the Interns for Indiana (IfI) program through Purdue University and accepted Cassie Gray from Wheatfield, Indiana, as their new marketing intern. IfI provides students with valuable educational experiences and gives companies access to some of the brightest young minds at Purdue University. To be qualified, a student must have a superior GPA, a junior standing or greater, and must be accepted through the Career Services Department of Purdue. Students that are accepted into the program work full-time during the summer.

Private pools require fences

If a prefabricated or constructed pool is more than 2 feet deep, the owner also must obtain a permit from the city of Dubuque.

The city of Dubuque is reminding residents of their responsibility in helping to prevent pool-related injuries.

Death by drowning in private pools has caused many cities and counties to enact ordinances requiring barriers or fencing around swimming pools.

Dubuque's ordinance defines a "swimming pool" as any constructed or prefabricated pool that is more than 18 inches deep and is used for swimming, bathing or wading.

Historical Society presents, 'Don't Fence Me In'

ISLAND PARK — Learn all about the meaning and impacts of fences from an environmental historian’s perspective, get updated on the Harriman State Park fencing project, and enjoy a great meal at the Island Park Historical Society’s annual meeting, set for 5 p.m. Saturday, June 12 at Pond’s Lodge.

“Don’t Fence Me In,” is a slide show and talk by Boise State University history professor, Lisa Brady. Her presentation is funded through a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council and donations from Pond’s Lodge and the Island Park News.

Adult presence - When there are small children in a pool, even if they can swim, an adult should be within an arm's length of children. This is the best way to assure your child will be safe in the pool.

Invasive pests' ride aboard fence shipment ends at Seattle port

After a shipment of fencing coming through Seattle's port from China was found to contain many crop-sensitive invasive caterpillars, federal inspectors began holding all fence shipments from the company. They uncovered an assortment of pests that if unstopped could have damaged thousands of dollars in crops.

Even the inspectors acknowledged they didn't have to search hard.

Smithsonian exhibit to explore fence history

A Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition, Between Fences, will be on view from Wednesday, May 15 to Friday, July 11, at the Milton Historical Society, 210 Union St., Milton.

Through a selection of artifacts, photographs and illustrations, Between Fences will surprise audiences with its exploration of the multiple meanings behind this everyday icon.

Whether made of split rails, decorative white pickets or tall chain link, a fence conveys information about the people who built it, how they view and use their property, and the nature of their relations with their neighbors.
